Cable rates' endless rise
05.01.2009 May 2009 Consumer Reports Magazine
Jay Young, 73, had never written a letter to the editor of his newspaper. But he was driven to in December, when Blue Ridge Communications informed him that his cable rates would increase almost 6 percent, he says. It was roughly the same jump he has seen in his bills every year since 2003.
When it comes to satellite television, there are basically two choices - DIRECTV or Dish Network. Which one is better for your needs?
First and foremost there is the price. Overall, Dish Network has the cheaper plans - or at least advertises cheaper plans. If you want basic local channels and your standard
extras
such as ESPN, USA, Disney, etc. You really could go either way. DIRECTV offers cheaper packages that they don't normally advertise on most sites. These packages are most often advertised to Spanish customers. I have one of these packages. At the time I ordered, it was called "Option Extra" - that's my English translation anyway. I essentially had all the same channels I had before with Dish Network with a few exceptions. Now you can find a similar package advertised as "Family Choice" but it doesn't have as many channels as we got with our package. Dish Network's answer to that was "DishFamily", which is again $10.00 cheaper. We got all the main channels we wanted - ESPN, TBS, USA, TLC. We did miss out on HGTV and
ABC
Family. So the price
war
goes to Dish Network.
Second there is the user interface. Dish Network is very blocky and has not changed much over the years. It is very
easy
to use and very
easy
to read. As far as I've seen it is the same on each receiver model. DIRECTV on the other hand, varies depending on the model. For example, you will see a different menu if you are using their standard receiver as opposed to TiVo. DIRECTV has more eye
candy
effects and can tend to be a little slower - especially on the TiVo model. On their standard model, it takes two clicks just to get to the guide. One thing that really annoys me with DIRECTV is that they don't do anything to mark the channels you don't have in the guide. If you don't have a certain channel with Dish Network, that channel will show up in red on the guide. So for ease of use, Dish Network wins again. Sorry DIRECTV, sometimes less is more.

Directv stinks! They misled me and told me that I could get a phone internet bundle and then they totally screwed up my order. It turns out that no internet is offered in my area. They wouldn't refund my money and then they wanted to charge me a cancellation fee. They finally agreed not to charge me a fee, but they acted like they were doing me some huge favor. They stink, don't use them

The 622 has a dual tuner. You can drive 2 TVs (one in SD) at no extra charge. You can record all the new episodes of the shows even if the time changes and it will skip reruns. You can search for a title and it will record it whenever they put that program on. I get 26 HD stations plus my locals. You can watch one program while recording another or record 2 programs while you watch a recording.
Competition drives the programming. Right now, Dish is the best.
